First-off, before you even start with any kind of yoga pose, you begin by
relaxing… Just that, will start to relieve some pain, as you exhale all the pain & stress from your body, with each breath.
Yoga for acute back pain should start with trouble-free stretches to loosen up the lower back muscles then yoga poses that strengthen the back and supporting muscles. Most of the time, all the back muscles and joints require, is a little regular exercise everyday. With a little effort and some guidance, yoga for back will certainly decrease your back pain… Maybe, for good!
Addressing lower back pain from a natural point of view, in my opinion is the only way to REALLY cure your pain… And not just treat thr symptom. Lower back stretches are a great way of starting the pain relieving process. You can get a handle on how severe your lower back problem is & what yoga poses (stretches) will work best for you. This is where an experienced yoga teacher can come in handy. Guiding, directing & supporting your muscles in the desired alignment.
A good, simple and relaxing back exercise is the ‘Inverted’ forward stretch. This is where person are laying on their back with their feet up the wall and if they can get in close as they can do so. If you are not capable of doing this, take your body away from the wall to take the pressure off. It is actually a nice relaxing way of being inverted and at the same time helps to relieve back pain.
One of the best lower back stretches is to lie on the floor, bend your knees so that they are pointing towards the ceiling and your feet are flat ont he floor. Take your right ankle & place it on your left knee. Now, bring your right arm through the middle of your legs & grasp your left arm as you reach around your left leg. Pull your leg towards your chest and exhale. Do the same for the left leg. And remember to breath deeply from your belly as you inhale & exhale. This works wonders for the lower back and sciatica.
With the right lower back stretches focused on in a daily yoga practice, you will be well on your way to living back pain free!
